inspiration + materials

My inspiration came from two things:  the yarn I'm using and an old book I had as a kid.  Kate Greenaway is a British illustrator who lived in the 19th century.  Her little girls always wore these pretty fingerless gloves. I wanted to use Alchemy Sanctuary because it is so soft and light, and because it is GORGEOUS!  The color is called Grass Harp.  I'm calling them my Greenaway Gloves. --Isabelle

thinking about thumbs

I have just completed the thumb gussett, which you can see poking out of the left side of my first Greenaway Glove. It only took a few increase rows that I worked into the rib stitch. I love the way the yarn is knitting up in sectional stripes.  It looks great in a skinny rib stitch, too.

thumb gusset

Here are two more pics of the thumb gusset.  I worked the increases in at the end of the row.  Also, it's important to keep the stitch pattern going, so some increases become knits and others become purls.

All done!

My little tribute to Kate Greenaway is finished!  I added a little eyelet row at the top, right before the bind off row.  Do you think Kate would like them?

Greenaway Gloves Pattern

greenaway.jpg

YARN:  1 skein Alchemy Sanctuary Colorways (or Alchemy Sanctuary)

NEEDLES: US size 5 double-pointed needles

NOTIONS:  1 stitch marker

GAUGE: 7 stitches per inch in K1, P1 Rib pattern.  Important! I measured the swatch without stretching or pulling it at all.

Cast on 40 stitches. Join into a round.

Work K1, P1 Rib for 28 rows or desired length to wrist.

Begin Thumb Gusset:

Note:  Make one (M1) by picking up the bar between two stitches, placing it on your left needle, and knitting it through the back of the loop with your right needle.

Row 1:  Rib to last 2 stitches.  K1, M1, P1.

Row 2:  Rib to last 3 stitches.  K1, P1, M1, P1.

Row 3: work Rib pattern.

Row 4:  Rib to last 4 stitches.  K1, P1, M1, K1, P1.

Row 5:  Rib to last 5 stitches.  K1, P1, K1, M1, K1, P1.

Row 6:  Work Rib pattern.

Row 7:  Rib to last 6 stitches.  K1, P1, K1, M1, P1, M1, K1, P1.

Row 8: Work Rib pattern.

Row 9: Rib to last 6 stitches.  K1, P1, M1, K1, M1, P1, K1, P1.

Rows 10 - 12:  Work Rib pattern.

Row 13:  Rib to last 10 stitches.  Bind off last 10 stitches.  Continue Rib pattern, closing the thumb gusset and taking the stitches on either side of the thumb gusset into the pattern.

Row 14:  Work Rib pattern for 3 rows.

Eyelet Row:  *K2tog, yo, repeat from * to end of row.

Bind off loosely. Enjoy!  -- Isabelle
